Why Are My Rolls Dense?
We don’t want dense and dry rolls. Light and fluffy rolls are so much better. Here are common reasons your rolls are dry and dense.
Adding too much flour: Don’t add more flour than needed. You should only add enough flour so that the dough isn’t super sticky. Too much flour will cause dry dough and result in dense rolls.
Yeast was killed: If the temperature of the water and milk goes above 110 degrees this will cause the yeast to dry and cause dense rolls. If the yeast is expired do not use. Store yeast in a cool dry place.
Over Baking: Over baking can cause dry rolls. You want to make sure you take the rolls out of the oven when the tops are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped. Note: every oven is different so baking times can very. If the rolls are golden and hollow when tapped and have been baking for less than the recipe calls for, they are more than likely done. Remove from the oven and check the rolls. Worse case they aren’t done and you put them back in. You don’t want to leave them to bake longer than needed.
