Christmas Traditions Your Family Will Love
1. Christmas picture book with your kids
This is actually a Christmas tradition I just started this year with my littles. Whether you have a newborn, toddler, or even a teenager, this is such a fun idea.
You take a Christmas photo everyday of December, print the photos out, and then put them in a photo book to look back at each Christmas.
This is such a fun way to see how much your littles/big kiddos have grown up in the past year. This could also be a really fun idea to do with your whole family, not just your kiddos. Image having all the photos of your husband/wife each year to look back on. You could even do you animals!
You could also pass on the photo books to your kids when they grow up and have families of their own. It would be so fun for their kids to be able to see a little bit of the magical childhood you created for them!
2. Gingerbread house contest
Okay but how fun does this sound!? Who doesn’t absolutely love decorating gingerbread houses? Now think of having a gingerbread house contest with your family and friends every year!
Gingerbread contests could be done in so many ways. You could do basic gingerbread houses or even giant gingerbread houses made from cardboard. There is so many fun ways this could be done.
This is also a super fun idea for your kiddos. I’ve only done gingerbread house contests a few times, but I’ve always wanted to keep the tradition going and would’ve loved doing it as a kid.
I don’t know about you but I’m definitely starting this Christmas tradition this year!
3. 25 days of Christmas books
Have you ever wanted to open a gift everyday leading up to Christmas? I know I definitely have.
I love this Christmas tradition especially for your littles. I’m sure you know how hard it is to keep your energetic toddlers from opening all the Christmas presents under the tree. You feel like it’s better just to wait to wrap everything till Christmas eve night am I right?
Wrap up 25 Christmas books and have your toddler open one a night. Not only do they get to open a gift every night, but they also get to listen to a magical Christmas story every night. What toddler wouldn’t love that?
Some of my favorite Christmas books are how the grinch stole Christmas, Rudolph the red nosed reindeer, and Santa clause is coming to town.
4. Advent calendar
Whether you are looking for a fun tradition for you husband, wife, toddler, or teenager this Christmas tradition can be for your whole family. And you can even DIY it if you don’t want to spend a bunch of extra money.
The only thing you really would need to buy would be some sort of empty advent calendar. Then you can DIY 25 fun things to put in it. Maybe you’re super crafty and can DIY the advent calendar too! Either way this is such a fun activity for you and your family to do.
5. Homemade salt ornaments
Wouldn’t you love to keep your babies and toddler’s hands and feet small forever? Homemade salt ornaments are the best way for you to do just that, and they are so easy to make! This is also a good idea if you want to make ornaments for your pets too.
Here is the recipe!
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 cup salt
- 3/4 cup water
You’re going to mix your flour and salt in a bowl, then add the water slowly. If you dough is dry and not sticking together you need to add more water, but don’t add too much. You want a play dough type consistency. You will bake your ornaments at 225 degrees for two hours. You may need more or less time depending how thick your ornaments are. How easy is that!?
6. Plant a pinecone
You’ll want your kiddos to find a pinecone while you’re out on walk or while they’re playing outside. Then they can put that pinecone wherever you plan on setting up you Christmas tree. Overnight you will set up the Christmas tree for your kiddos to wake up to the next morning. This idea will be so magical for your kiddos!
Don’t put up your Christmas tree ornaments until your kiddos can help though! They will be so excited to help decorate the new tree that just grew!
I didn’t start this Christmas tradition this year because I didn’t find out about it until after are tree was already up. However, I do think it’s going to be one of our new Christmas traditions we start next year!
7. Christmas theme movie night
Having a Christmas theme movie night one day out of the week starting after Thanksgiving makes being a mom so much more fun! You can make snack boxes and have fun drinks that match the movie you decide to watch. You can wear pjs to match the theme. And you can even build different types of forts each night. Your kiddos will have so much fun with this.. Honestly you might have just as much fun!
Here are some movie theme ideas!
- The Grinch
- The Santa clause
- Rudolph the red nosed reindeer
- Elf
- Home alone
8. Christmas morning magic
Christmas morning can be so much more magical if you do a few extra things.
Get matching Christmas pjs for your whole family and wear them on Christmas eve! Make sure to leave cookies and milk out for Santa on Christmas eve. Oh, and don’t forget to leave some carrots for the reindeer! Your kiddos will love helping you leave the cookies out for Santa!
Tape wrapping paper or put streamers on your kids doors along with red and green ballons the night before Christmas. When they wake up and open the door they get to run through and ripe the wrapping paper! How exciting does that sound!? Streamers will work better if you have younger kids.
Another fun thing to do is to use your snow boots and next to your Christmas tree sprinkle flour or powdered sugar over the boots so it looks like Santa got snow all over your floor.
You can add on something magical to do every year on Christmas morning. This Christmas tradition is great because you can do it every year and also add on to it making it seem like a new tradition every year.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year
Christmas is the most wonderful and magical time of the year. Especially if you have kiddos! It’s so fun watching them grow every year and seeing how they react to Christmas each year. Making memories and having Christmas traditions is such a fun part of the holiday season. Your kids get to experience magical Christmases every year and you get to create a magical childhood for them. You also get to ride along and create lasting memories for yourself.
Don’t get me wrong Christmas is still magical even if you don’t have Christmas traditions. Your kiddos will love you just as much if you do or don’t have Christmas traditions. Having traditions isn’t needed but it definitely can add some more magic to Christmas time.
Maybe you hid the pickle in your Christmas tree or have a Christmas movie marathon. Or maybe you volunteer every year. Either way Christmas time is so special. Don’t forget to soak up all the moments with your family and friends. Spend a little extra time making a Christmas tradition for yourself or for you and your husband or wife. Making Christmas extra magical can be for you too not just your kiddos!
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you and your family!
