These chicken teriyaki bowls are simple to make, taste amazing, and are made with a homemade teriyaki sauce. You can make these bowls with white rice, brown rice, or even cauliflower rice. I love how easy this recipe comes together, and you can use the left over teriyaki sauce on some beef, chicken, or even salmon the next day. These bowls are great for meal prepping for the week and are a great meal your whole family will love!

I’ve been making teriyaki bowls for years now! I would always buy store bought teriyaki sauce because I thought it would be too hard to make it homemade. Boy was I wrong. I finally decided to try making teriyaki sauce myself my gosh is it’s so easy and it taste so much better than store bought teriyaki sauce.

I didn’t want to share this recipe until I was able to have a good teriyaki sauce that went with it. Now that I’ve created the perfect sauce, I finally get to share this recipe. So, let’s get into it shall we!

Ingredients for Chicken Teriyaki Bowls

For this recipe you’ll be making homemade teriyaki sauce so you may have to swing by the grocery store to pick up things that you may not normally have in your house. Add the ingredients to your next grocery list that way you won’t have to make an extra stop another day!

Ingredients for the homemade teriyaki sauce:

  • Soy Sauce
  • Brown Sugar
  • Honey
  • Minced Garlic
  • Fresh Ginger
  • Crushed Red Pepper Flakes
  • Orange Zest
  • Rice Wine
  • Sesame Oil
  • Water
  • Corn Starch

How to Make Chicken Teriyaki Bowls

Homemade Teriyaki Sauce:

  1. In a saucepan add all the ingredients mix together soy sauce, brown sugar, honey, ginger, garlic, ground pepper, crushed red pepper flakes, orange zest, rice wine, and sesame oil. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  2. Whisk together the water and corn starch then add the mixture to the saucepan. Boil for 1 minute stirring constantly. The mixture should become thick. Remove from heat and set aside.

How To make Teriyaki Bowls:

  1. Heat a pan with one tablespoon olive oil and add the chicken. Season with ground pepper and garlic powder. Cook until the chicken is completely done and tender. 4-5 minutes per side.
  2. Remove chicken, let cool, and cut into chucks.
  3. Return the chicken to the same pan and return pour over the homemade teriyaki sauce. Give the chicken a good mix until the chicken is covered in teriyaki sauce. Return to low heat to warm before adding to your bowl.
  4. Heat a pan and sauté broccoli for 5 minutes or until tender. Remove from heat and set aside until ready to use.
  5. Lasty you’ll assemble the bowls. Evenly distribute the cooked rice in 4 bowls. Add 1/4 of the chicken and 1/4 of the broccoli to each of the bowls. Drizzle extra teriyaki sauce over the bowls if desired. (Store leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator) Sprinkle the bowls with sesame seeds and serve warm.

Expert Tips

  • Whisk the corn starch and water well: You’ll want to make sure you mix the corn starch and water until there are no chucks before adding the mixture into the teriyaki sauce. Also make sure you add the corn starch mixture to simmering teriyaki sauce.
  • Sauce is too thick: If the teriyaki sauce is to thick add in a little bit of water to thin it out. Do this slowly by adding one tablespoon of water to the sauce until you have to consistency you want.
  • Double the recipe: If you like adding extra sauce to your teriyaki bowls then it’s best to double up on the ingredients when making the teriyaki sauce.
  • Meal Prep: This recipe is great for meal prepping. Double or triple up on the whole recipe that way you can have prepared meals for the week for your whole family.

Chicken Teriyaki Bowl Substations and Variations

  • Protein: You can always choose another protein option. Tofu and shrimp are great options.
  • Veggies: These bowls are great with any of your favorite veggies. Bell peppers are another great option. Sauté or boil the veggies. Whatever you prefer!
  • Rice: Although I prefer brown rice you can use any rice for these bowls! White rice is a great option and for a low carb option you could use cauliflower rice.
  • Teriyaki Sauce: I always say homemade is best, but you could always use store bought teriyaki sauce if you don’t feel up to making it. I used to do it all the time, and the bowls still taste good!
